Myanmar, Indonesia hold joint commission meeting in Yangon

YANGON, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar-Indonesia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) held its second meeting in Yangon Wednesday, highlighting political and security cooperation, economic cooperation and social and cultural cooperation, said a press release of the meeting.

The meeting was represented by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and his Indonesian counterpart Marty M. Natalegawa.

In the political and security cooperation, the release said, the JCBC meeting discussed the commitment to strengthen cooperation on advancing good governance, democracy and human rights, the readiness of the Election Commission of Indonesia, the National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia and the Indonesian Institute of Science to establish contact and cooperation with their counterparts in Myanmar and Indonesia's firm commitment to continue to render assistance to Myanmar through sharing information and best practices as well as capacity building.

In the economic cooperation, the JCBC meeting discussed the commitment to promote direct trade and intensify cooperation on identifying and eliminating barriers preventing expansion of trade with the intent to achieve the 500 million U.S. dollars' target in trade value by 2015 and reactivation of various capacity building programs in the fields of forestry, agriculture, fishery, transport and banking by 2012.

In the social and cultural cooperation, the meeting touched on commitment to establish cooperation in the fields of information and ICT, commitment to strengthen cultural and tourism cooperation by promoting religious tourism and sister pagoda cooperation.

Natalegawa arrived here Wednesday on a one-day visit to Myanmar for the meeting, on the sideline of which he met with Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), at the latter's residence and discussed about Indonesian commitment to support Myanmar's reform and democratization process.

It was the third visit of Natalegawa to Myanmar during this year. He last visited the country in October.

The first Myanmar-Indonesia JCBC meeting was held in Jakarta in February in 2007.
